Dr Mohd Effendy encourages graduates to keep dreaming and learning

630 graduates received their diplomas at the SIM Diploma Graduation Ceremony on 10 June 2016. The guest-of-honour was Dr Mohd Effendy Rajab, Executive Director of the Singapore Scout Association and an alumnus of the SIM Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) programme.

Dr Effendy’s own educational journey is a compelling story, and one in which SIM has a key starring role.

Dr Effendy returned to school (SIM) at the age of 33 to get his first certificate in management before eventually working his way up to a doctoral degree. Dr Effendy shared that though his initial motivation was “externally driven” to pursue a paper qualification, he came to develop a genuine love for learning and knowledge acquisition. Hence, his decision to pursue post-graduate studies.

Despite his many commitments along the way, Dr Effendy persevered in his studies during his 11 years in SIM. His journey has had a profound impact both professionally and personally, allowing him to make positive contributions in other people’s lives. In his closing remarks, Dr Effendy urged graduates to keep learning, stay focused on their dreams and always be hopeful.

Dr Timothy Chan, Director, Academic Division, SIM Global Education also addressed the graduates, pointing out that failure is something one can avoid only by “saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing”. In short, failure is often necessary to success. Dr Chan encouraged graduates to be fearless and courageous, or they will never know what remarkable things they are capable of.

The DMS programme was launched in 1973 and is SIM’s longest running certificated programme with close to 20,000 graduates so far. Other graduates who received their diplomas at the ceremony were those from the Management Studies, Accounting, Banking and Finance, International Business and Human Resource Management programmes.
