Selfie moment at inaugural OAC Malaysia

OAC Johor 2014 “Smile, you’re on candid camera!”, says emcees Jason (holding the phone) and Gwendoline (just behind him)

“This is our moment, let’s take an alumni selfie!”, enthused Jason Chee (SIM Diploma in Management Studies, 2014) as the ballroom full of SIM Global Education (GE) alumni got into their poses at Thistle Hotel, Johor Bahru.

Jason was one of 24 alumni at the Overseas Alumni Chapter (OAC) held for the first time in Malaysia on 26 April 2014. In attendance also were Malaysian students now studying in SIM GE, Singaporean alumni and SIM GE staff. For those based in Singapore, a bus brought them to Thistle Hotel and back.

The buzz for the event began as early as January where e-mail invites were sent to all alumni, whether in Malaysia or Singapore. “We got the event details from our e-mail and decided to take time out to attend,” said Singaporeans Bala Murugan and Edwin Koh both UOL graduate in 2010 and 2009.

Our livewire emcees, Jason and Gwendoline Ng, brought tears of laughter to the audience by their mutual teasing on stage, impromptu jokes they cracked, and even asking the audience to sing along during the stage performance.

The Malaysian alumni network planned and carried out the entire event that included a buffet-style dinner, games and singing, and even a Chinese er-hu performance. Some also shared their nostalgic experience as students at SIM.

The co-ordinator behind the homecoming event was UOL graduate (2013) Khoo Sze Wei, who while studying at SIM a few years back, started MCSIM, an international club for Malaysian students. MCSIM organises events and activities where Malaysian students come together for mutual support and social interaction.

Sze Wei currently works in an events company in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is responsible for bringing her former study pals together to manage the homecoming. Ironically she wasn’t present although she had a live video chat with the participants that night via Skype.

And before the night was over, everyone was looking forward to the mega alumni homecoming, to be held in Singapore on 11 July 2014.

Till then, terima kasih Malaysia!
