Staying focused and not be afraid to fail
That was the collective lesson from SIM alumni and property developer Dato Eric Cheng and windsurfing sportsman Tan Wearn Haw who shared their different paths to success.
At SIM Global Education's 2nd CEO Dialogue on Nov 29, 2013, both alumni of SIM’s signature “Job of The Chief Executive” programme were joined by SIM GE Chief Executive Adjunct Prof K.C Lee as they shared leadership insights with student leaders and scholars.
Eric, a real estate magnate and CEO of ECG Group of companies, recounted his career beginning as a flight steward earning a comfortable salary. He quit his job to become a property agent and a steady climb to be what he is today. He stressed the value of smart networking (handing out 15 name-cards every day) and savvy investment (for example, investing in 33 properties to take advantage of the economic downturn); and how he leads his employees by his work example.
“As CEO, I set the example by giving 300% at work in order to keep the staff focused and deliver 100% for the company!” said Eric who impressed the audience with his go-getter drive.
Wearn Haw, ex-Olympian and CEO of the Singapore Sailing Federation, shared his own unorthodox life journey of going into aeronautical engineering (a field which none of his peers took up), pursuing competitive sailing and further studies, and of daring to experiment in areas beyond the classroom and books.
“Don’t be afraid to fail or fall behind those who took the conventional path to success. Experience as many areas of life as possible, and remember to give back when you can,” exhorted Wearn Haw who declared that success was more than material tangibles.
The CEO Dialogue @ SIM GE is an annual initiative of SIM Scholars’ Network supported by GE Alumni Relations and SIM Professional Development.
