In this ‘Confessions of SIMtrepreneur’ series, we feature four SIM GE alumni who have soared to great heights of success in the business world as entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. They reveal their honest views on their successes, struggles, and journey at SIM GE. Here are highlights of what they had to share.
Is A University Degree Necessary To Run A Business?
“You don’t really need a university degree to start a business. There are a lot of successful entrepreneurs who are now in their 50s 60s, some are even in their 70s -they are real life examples. They don’t need a degree, they don’t even have O-Level certs, but they can run a business. But with that said, a university degree, especially from SIM GE, it offers a global perspective… SIM GE provides us with a lot of knowledge to run the business on a different level...I also think that an education, especially a tertiary education is important…it’s the people, the students, the peers that we meet. Ultimately, we are going to progress together in society and also we get to have very close interaction with lecturers, who were industry leaders, so this is what makes a university degree valuable.”
“People mention that being an entrepreneur is very glamorous, you must be very rich, you must have a strong financial backing, you must be lucky. I think all these things are not entirely lies, but it’s more, a mixture of everything ...it takes a lot of perseverance. I used to not draw salary for about six months, so this is how bad (it was), you have to sacrifice a lot of your (other) commitments, (and have) time management. The more I focus on the business, the less I have focus on other areas. This is something that nobody can see except for the family.”
Advice For Students
“Five years upon graduation, it will be the best time to work for a smaller company, so you get to do everything. You’ll get to learn from scratch... so, the first five years is for the students to really spend their time at work. You’ll get to see a lot of different things and grow from there.”
